As noted in the history, the annual “Bake-Offs” were presided over by the chair of the VFX Nominating Committee before VFX became a branch. As the chair from 1991 to 1995, I took these occasions to summarize the activities of the VFX community during the preceding year. These remarks, reproduced below, give something of the flavor of the build-up to the push for Branch status.
